Wisdom cannot come by railroad or automobile or aeroplane, or be hurried up by telegraph or telephone.

— John Burroughs

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Information moves as fast as you can carry it. Understanding does not, because it is made of things that need time to happen to you: a mistake you repeat until you see the pattern, a judgment you make and later watch play out. No amount of speed changes how long that takes. Which is why you can read a great deal and still be no steadier than you were.

Pick something you have been reading about and stop adding to the stack for a while. Go and do one small piece of it instead, badly, and see what the doing tells you that the reading did not.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What are you trying to reach faster than it can arrive?
