The easy road always charges a toll somewhere down the line.

Easy is not free, it is deferred. Skipping the reading, copying the sheet, letting somebody else run the group project: each one gets you through the week and quietly removes something you will need later, usually at the exact moment you cannot fake it. The toll booth is real. It just sits further down the road than the shortcut.

When you catch yourself choosing the quick version, ask what it is borrowing against. Sometimes the answer is nothing much and you should take it. Sometimes it is the skill you signed up for, and then the slower way is worth it.
