“You always” and “you never” turn one argument into a trial of their whole personality.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Those two phrases change the subject from one event to a verdict on a whole person. You wanted to talk about the dishes or the missed text, and now they are defending their entire character, which they will do hard, because that is a much bigger thing to lose. The original problem never gets discussed at all.

Keep the next complaint the size it actually is. Name the one thing, the one time, and what you would like instead. It sounds smaller and works better, and the other person can agree without surrendering.
