CREATIVITY
When you reach for the phrase everyone uses, you are handing over a secondhand version of what happened to you. It is safe, and it is also why the line slides past without touching anyone. Your actual feeling probably does not sound like a greeting card. It sounds slightly wrong, too specific, a bit embarrassing to say out loud.
Take one line in your work that felt easy to write and ask what you really meant underneath it. Write that version even if it comes out clumsy. Clumsy and true can be fixed, while smooth and borrowed cannot.
What did you actually feel before borrowing somebody else’s words?
