Sometimes you don’t know what your piece was about until months after you made it. That’s allowed.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Meaning often arrives long after the making. You work from instinct and pattern, and instinct is quicker than your ability to explain it, so whatever was actually on your mind shows up in the work before it shows up in your words. Months later you look back and the subject is suddenly obvious, sitting there in the colors or the repeated line.

Stop demanding that you understand a piece before you begin it. Start from an image, a sound, a feeling you cannot name yet. Come back in a few months and write down what you can see in it now.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Do any of your older pieces make sense only now?
