Find photos of your parents at your age. They had whole lives they rearranged around you.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Parents get compressed into their function. You met them already in the role, so it is genuinely hard to picture them at seventeen with bad hair, terrible plans and a friend group that meant everything. Those people existed, and then they made a series of decisions that folded that life into a smaller shape so yours could be bigger.

Go find the old photos. Ask who is in them and what happened to those people. You will get stories you have never heard, and the conversation itself tends to be the good part. It also makes it much harder to see your parents as scenery.
