Your parent’s accent is the sound of everything they crossed to get you here.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

An accent is a record of a life lived somewhere else. It means somebody learned a second language as an adult, which is genuinely hard, and did it while working and raising you and being underestimated in rooms where they were the most capable person there. The thing that can embarrass you in public is the evidence of the whole crossing.

Ask about the before. What the house sounded like, what they missed first, what they got wrong in the first year and can laugh about now. Learn a few words in the other language. And notice exactly what is happening when someone talks over them.
