Watching your little brother figure something out for the first time is a live show. Don’t miss it for a video.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

First times only run once. A kid working out how something fits together makes a face that will never happen again in quite that way, and the whole thing takes about four seconds. Nothing on a screen is that scarce. The feed will still be sitting there afterward, unchanged.

When a younger kid in your life is mid-attempt at something, put the phone face down and watch. Do not coach, and do not rescue them early. Being the person who was actually looking is worth more to them than help they never asked for.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When did you last watch a younger kid learn something?
