Roots don’t get compliments. They’re just the reason the tree is still standing after the storm.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

What keeps you standing in a bad month got built during the months when nothing much was happening. Habits, a couple of real friendships, a boring routine, the things you know about yourself: none of it is interesting while conditions are calm. It only announces itself when something heavy arrives and you find out whether you are anchored.

Use the calm stretch deliberately. Keep the routine on days it seems pointless, answer your people when nothing is wrong, do maintenance while nothing is broken. Calm is the only time roots are available to grow.
