Ask your grandma how she makes it. That recipe won’t be online, and one day you’ll want it.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Some knowledge only exists inside people, and it leaves when they do. A recipe held in someone’s hands, the amounts nobody ever wrote down, the small corrections they make without thinking, none of it is stored anywhere you could search. It also tends to arrive with the rest of the story attached. Asking is the only way to move it across.

Find one person in your family who knows how to do something nobody else does, and ask them to show you. Write it down badly, in the kitchen, while they talk. Ask the questions that feel too obvious, because those parts never make it into the telling.
