Fixing something with your own hands changes your relationship to the objects around you. They stop being sealed boxes that either work or need replacing and start being things made of parts, most of which can be understood. The confidence that comes out of that is oddly large compared to the size of the repair, and it spreads to problems that have nothing to do with plumbing.

Pick one thing in your place that is broken or annoying and learn to fix it yourself this month. A video, some patience, the right tool. Do not start with anything involving gas or live wiring.
