Ask a person what evidence would change their opinion. If they can’t name any, stop debating and start observing.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Some positions are conclusions and some are identities, and the question tells you which one you are looking at. A person holding a conclusion can describe what would move them, even reluctantly. A person whose view is part of who they are cannot, because nothing is allowed to count. Neither is a character flaw, it just means one conversation is an exchange and the other is a performance.

Ask it plainly, without a trap in your voice. If they can answer, keep talking, because that is a real conversation. If they cannot, save your energy and pay attention to what they do instead.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Who do you argue with who can never name any evidence?
