The scoreboard knows the final score. It doesn’t know who played hurt, who stepped up or who grew up.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

A number at the end of a game is a summary, and every summary throws nearly everything away. It keeps no record of who played through pain, who covered for someone else, who was frightened and went anyway. Those are the things the people in the room still remember years later, long after the score has faded.

Keep your own record. After something that did not go your way, write down what you genuinely did well, specifically enough that it would convince a stranger. The scoreboard is never going to do that part for you.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What did the final score miss about how you played?
