Your dog is thrilled by the same walk every single day. Maybe the walk was never the boring part.
REFLECTION
WHAT THIS MEANS
Dogs are not thrilled by novelty, they are thrilled by the walk, which is the part most people stop noticing after about two weeks. Boredom is rarely a property of the activity. It is what happens once attention leaves and you are just moving through something you have already filed away. The same street is dull or interesting depending on what you bring to it.
Take a route you have done a hundred times and find three things you have never noticed on it. If that sounds stupid, do it anyway and see what you get.
A QUESTION TO SIT WITH
What do you call boring that you stopped really looking at?
MORE IN MEANING & PERSPECTIVE
- The repaired mug is the one people ask about. Being fixed is more interesting than being new.
- Ask your grandparents for their stories while you still can. There’s a whole history book sitting at the dinner table.
- Meaning isn’t hiding somewhere waiting to be found. It’s a thing you build out of what you already have.
