An opinion about you costs them nothing. Don’t pay for it with your peace.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Forming a judgment takes somebody four seconds and no thought, and they have usually forgotten it by dinner. Carrying it can take you a fortnight. The exchange rate is what makes this unfair, not the opinion itself, and noticing the imbalance is often enough to loosen it. They spent nothing; you are paying in sleep.
Decide whose views have standing with you, and keep the list short: people who know you, who want good things for you, and who have earned the right to say hard things. Everyone else gets heard and not carried. When something lands badly, check which list it came from before you start rearranging yourself.
Whose throwaway remark have you carried around for weeks?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
