Try to be liked by everyone and you’ll edit out everything worth loving.

Being liked by everybody requires sanding off every edge that anyone could object to: the opinions, the weird taste in music, the laugh, the thing you care about more than is cool. What is left is agreeable and forgettable. The traits that make someone love you are usually the same ones that make someone else roll their eyes. You cannot keep one without risking the other.

This week, let one real preference show in a room where it is not the safe answer. Say the film you actually like, or admit you do not find the joke funny. Watch who moves closer.
