Beginnings are always out of proportion to what follows. The first one is small enough to skip, small enough to justify, small enough that nobody would call it a decision, which is exactly why it gets waved through every time. What makes it matter is not its size but its position, standing in front of everything that comes after.

Since you will not recognize the important small thing in advance, treat the first one as if it counted. The first missed session, the first small lie, the first time you say yes when you meant no. Equally, the first good one: it also looks too small to bother with.
