A photo is a square cut out of a whole day. Don’t envy the square.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Every picture is a decision about what to leave out. The frame cuts away the argument in the car, the boredom beforehand, the person who was not speaking to anyone. What reaches you is the most presentable two per cent of a day, arranged so it looks like the whole of it.

When an image makes your life feel small, widen the frame in your head. Ask what was going on ten minutes either side of it. Then look at your own day with all its ordinary material and compare like with like.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which single photo made you envy somebody’s entire life?
