Some compliments come with a hook in them. Check what they’re asking for right after.

Praise can be a doorway. Warm words arrive, the request follows in the next sentence, and you say yes partly because refusing right after accepting a compliment feels rude. Not everybody doing this is manipulating you on purpose. The pattern is still worth noticing, since it works on almost everyone.

When a compliment shows up immediately before an ask, separate the two. Thank them for the first part and answer the second on its own merits. You are allowed to accept the nice thing and still say no.
