Your follower count is a number, not a mirror. Stop checking it to see what you look like.

A count measures how many accounts pressed a button, which is a thin fact about the internet rather than a fact about you. It feels like a reflection because it moves, and anything that responds to what you do starts to seem like feedback on who you are. It is not reporting on your face, your worth, or whether anyone would miss you. It reports traffic.

When you catch yourself opening the app to check, ask what you were actually hoping to learn. Usually it is something a number cannot answer. Take that question to a person who knows you instead.
