Knowing yourself includes knowing you need people. Independence isn’t pretending you don’t.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Self-sufficiency gets treated as the finished version of a person, so needing others starts to feel like a gap you ought to close. It is not a gap. Needing people is a standing feature of being one, and the sturdiest kind of independence is knowing exactly what you need from others and being able to ask directly instead of hinting or quietly going without.

Name one thing you genuinely need from somebody right now: help, company, an honest answer. Ask for it plainly this week. Asking well is a skill, and it is a different skill from managing alone.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Do you admit needing people, or call it independence?
