The first night in a new place always feels too quiet. Give it a week; it’s just you getting introduced to yourself.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

New silence is louder than old silence. Your ears are still tuned to the last place, so the absence reads as wrongness rather than quiet, and everything you normally do not notice about yourself becomes audible. That is disorienting for a few days. It is also just the sound of a room that has not yet learned your habits.

Give a new place a week before deciding how you feel about it. Put one familiar thing in early, the same mug, the same music. Familiarity builds up faster than it seems to on the first night.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

A week into somewhere new, what did you learn about yourself?
