The best journal prompt is one question you’re scared to answer honestly.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Comfortable questions produce comfortable answers you already had. The one you flinch from is the one your mind has been routing around, and the flinch is a reliable marker for where something unresolved is sitting. Writing gets there slowly, which is what makes it bearable: you can stop, nobody is reading, and nothing has to be decided just because it got written down.

Put the question you have been avoiding at the top of a page this week. Answer it badly, in fragments if fragments are all that come. The first honest sentence is usually the whole point.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

How honest would your answer be to the hardest question?
