A frenemy is someone who claps for you with one hand and takes notes with the other.

Some support has a second purpose. The person is genuinely pleased for you and also measuring, comparing, filing away what you said for later, and both of those are happening at once. It is rarely as sinister as it sounds, because most people do a version of it. The problem starts when the notes matter more than the clapping.
Watch what happens when something good arrives for you rather than for them. Notice who asks a real question and who changes the subject quickly. Keep the second group in your life if you want, just stop telling them the things you would hate to hear repeated.
Whose applause for you has always felt a little studied?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
