You’re average at plenty of things. Everybody is. Knowing which ones keeps you from wasting years pretending.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Being ordinary at most things is the standard arrangement rather than a personal failing. What costs you is defending a middling skill for years because you built an identity on it before the evidence arrived. Knowing where you actually stand is not giving up, it frees your attention for the two or three places where you are genuinely unusual. Most people find those late, because nobody mentioned that looking was allowed.

Name one thing you are fine at and stop pretending it is more. Nothing bad happens. Give the hours back to something you are actually curious about, and let yourself be bad at it for a while.
