A screenshot without context is a rumor with a picture.

Screenshots look like proof, which is exactly what makes them dangerous. They show real words while hiding the twenty messages before them, the joke they were answering, the tone they were said in. Once one is moving, nobody goes back for the missing part, and the person in the picture spends a week explaining something that was never accurately shown.

When one lands in your chat, the useful question is what came before it. Ask before you forward, and if you cannot get the rest of the conversation, let it stop with you. Passing it on is a decision, even when everyone else already has.
