Count how many times you steer the conversation back to you. Then try one follow-up question instead.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Redirecting is mostly automatic. Someone mentions a trip, and you have a trip, so out it comes, and it genuinely feels like relating rather than taking over. Done once it is fine. Done six times in an hour, the other person has been interviewed by someone who never asked a question.
Keep a rough tally for one conversation, which is enough to make the habit visible. When you feel the pull to match their story, ask about theirs instead: what happened next, or what that was like. The second question is where people actually start telling you something.
