Generosity with an audience is partly a transaction, and there is nothing wrong with that, but it tells you very little about yourself. Giving when nobody will ever know removes the return entirely, which is what makes it the only honest test of why you were doing it. The absence of credit is the whole point.

Do one thing this month that nobody hears about. Pay for something quietly, help and let the story belong to someone else, leave it unmentioned even when mentioning it would be easy. Notice the small pull to tell somebody. That pull is worth knowing about.
