Deleting the message doesn’t un-ring the bell. Somebody already heard it.

Removal changes the record and not the memory. Once something has been read, it exists in another person’s head, where you have no access and no delete function. The visible cleanup can even make it worse, because now there is both the thing and the attempt to hide it.

If something has landed badly, go straight to the person rather than to the settings. Say what you meant and what you got wrong, without explaining at length. Repair is the only mechanism available once a thing has been seen, and it works better than pretending.
