The greatest teachers explain why something matters before demanding that it be remembered.

Being asked to remember something whose purpose you cannot see produces compliance rather than learning, and the material falls out of your head as soon as the requirement lifts. Meaning is what makes information stick, because it gives the mind somewhere to attach it. Teaching why first takes a few minutes and saves a great deal of repetition.

Before you ask anyone to learn something, tell them where it will matter. If you cannot say, that is worth knowing too. It may not be the right thing to teach yet.
