Before you cancel someone forever, remember how many second chances you’ve been handed.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Judgment is easiest to hand out when you are not counting what you have received. Most people have been forgiven repeatedly, by parents who let it go, friends who stayed, teachers who could have made an example of them. Remembering it does not excuse what someone did, but it changes who you are in the story.

Before you close the door on somebody, recall a time your worst hour was not treated as your whole record. Then decide what distance you need, which may be real and may be large. Just make that decision as someone who has been handed grace rather than as someone who never was.
