Everything you plan for the future has to be paid for out of present days, and the present is the only account you have. This is why tomorrow so often stays a plan: it requires a payment today that nothing is forcing you to make. The cost is not effort so much as attention taken away from what is immediately in front of you.

When you notice yourself planning at length, ask what today’s payment toward that plan would be. Make it small enough to actually pay. Plans that never draw on the present are wishes with a calendar attached.
