Watch other people crash, then study the skid marks. It’s the cheapest lesson available.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Experience is expensive when it is yours and nearly free when it belongs to somebody else. Every visible failure around you arrives with the sequence attached: what they tried, what they ignored, where it turned. You can have the lesson without the bill, provided you are willing to study something uncomfortable rather than look away or feel superior.

When something goes badly for someone nearby, hold off on the verdict and look for the mechanism instead. Ask yourself honestly whether you would have seen it coming. Keeping that question private and answering it truthfully is where the value sits.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whose mistake could have saved you trouble if you had studied it?
