Your old essays are a map of how you used to think. Read them and see how far you’ve come.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Your own past writing is the only record of a mind you can no longer reach directly. Memory smooths the past into a story where you always thought roughly what you think now, which hides how much movement has actually happened. Reading the actual sentences breaks that illusion, sometimes uncomfortably.

Find something you wrote two or three years ago and read it without editing as you go. Notice what you were certain about and what you could not yet see. The point is not to cringe but to prove that thinking changes, which makes the current version feel less final.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What did you write two years ago that you would now argue with?
