Feelings deserve acknowledgment without automatically deserving command.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
Every emotion has a legitimate claim to be noticed. Almost none of them have a legitimate claim to decide what you do next. The difference between acknowledgment and obedience is the whole of emotional life, and confusing them produces two opposite errors: people who suppress everything and people who are steered by whatever is loudest that hour. Neither is listening properly.
Try a two-step response when something rises. First, name it without arguing: I am angry, I am scared, I am envious. Then ask, as a genuinely separate question, what you want to do. The gap between the two steps can be brief, but its existence changes almost everything.
