You don’t need a walk-out song to start. Most real work begins in silence and sweatpants.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

The imagined beginning has music, a clear morning and the right mood. The real one has none of that, which is why waiting for the cinematic version works so well as a delay. Actual work starts in ordinary conditions, usually while you feel unremarkable, and feeling unremarkable is not a sign the timing is wrong. It is simply what starting is like.

Lower the requirements for beginning until they are almost nothing: sit down, open the file, give it fifteen minutes. Save the ceremony for afterwards, if you still want it then.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When will you start if the mood never turns dramatic?
