Sunscreen is a gift to a version of you twenty years from now. So is most discipline.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
The person who benefits from today’s restraint is someone you have not met, and you will never feel their thanks. That is the whole difficulty, since the cost is immediate and specific while the payoff is distant and statistical. Discipline is mostly generosity toward a stranger who happens to have your name.
Pick one small thing whose benefit lands years out, and attach it to something you already do daily. Do not wait to feel motivated by an abstract future. Think of that later self as a real person you have agreed to look after.
What could you do today that future you would appreciate?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
