Zoom in far enough on any photo and it’s just random squares. Zoom out on a bad week before you judge it.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Detail at close range always looks like chaos, because the pattern only exists at a distance. A bad week examined hour by hour is a pile of failures. The same week set next to the eleven before it is usually a dip in an otherwise steady line, or a stretch where something hard was happening and you kept going anyway.

When you catch yourself grading a single day, widen the frame before you decide what it means. Look at the month. Look at last year. Ask whether the thing you are calling a collapse would even be visible from there.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which bad week looks different from a month away?
