Scraped knees heal from the edges in. You can’t speed it up by staring at the bandage.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Healing happens at its own rate and mostly out of sight. The work goes on underneath continuously whether you are watching or not, and watching adds nothing except a sharper awareness of how slow it is. This is true of skin and it is true of the harder kinds of recovery as well.

If you are in the middle of mending from something, try to stop checking how far along you are. Keep the conditions good: rest, food, people, the ordinary structure of a day. Look back monthly rather than hourly. The progress is real at a resolution you are not checking at.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What healing are you watching instead of letting happen?
