Justice should care about restoring what can be restored, not merely balancing pain.

Making someone hurt as much as you did returns nothing. The loss is still a loss, the damage is still there, and now there is more of it in the world. A response aimed at restoration asks a different question: what can actually be given back, rebuilt, or made safe. Sometimes the answer is very little, and even then it is a better thing to be aiming at.
When you have been harmed, ask what would genuinely improve your situation. Money, an apology, a change in arrangements, distance. Pursue that. If nothing can be restored, grieving the loss is more honest work than balancing the pain, though it is considerably harder.
