Eventually your possessions belong to someone else; your influence may not.

Everything you own is temporarily assigned to you and will belong to someone else soon enough. Influence behaves differently: what you taught someone, or how you treated them, keeps operating in them and sometimes in the people they affect afterwards. That is not guaranteed either, and it is the part with any chance of persisting. It also requires no maintenance from you.

Spend a little less energy on accumulating and a little more on the people who are learning something from you, whether or not they know it. Ask what you would want someone to keep from knowing you. Then behave in a way that makes that likely.
