Labels handed to you young have a way of becoming instructions. A word said by someone with authority gets absorbed before you have any ability to argue with it, and then years of behavior organize themselves around it, which makes it look like proof. Most of the evidence for it was produced by believing it.

Name the word you were given and where it came from. Then look for the times you were plainly not that thing, which will take effort because they were never filed. Acting against an old label feels false for a while, and that feeling is not a sign it is untrue.
