Childhood ends gradually through responsibilities no birthday announces.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
There is no moment when it happens. It happens through a series of small transfers: the first time you handle something alone, the first time someone relies on you and you cannot pass it on, the first time you are the one making the call about a parent. Nothing marks these, and looking back you cannot say when the balance tipped.
If you are in the middle of that shift, give yourself credit for weight you have never been formally handed. Name what you are actually carrying, out loud to someone. Unrecognized responsibility is much heavier than acknowledged responsibility, and almost all of yours is probably the first kind.
Which ordinary duty first made you feel like an adult?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
