Your first reaction is a reflex. Your second thought is you. Wait for the second one before hitting send.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

The first thing that arrives is a reflex, assembled from old habits and whatever mood you were already carrying. The second thing, a few seconds behind it, is the part of you that considers. Most regret comes from sending the first one while it still felt like conviction.

Build a small gap into anything sharp: write the reply and leave it unsent for ten minutes, or say you will come back to them. The reflex rarely survives that gap intact. What you send afterwards is usually something you still recognise as yours next week.
