Be honest with everyone and open with a few. Those aren’t the same thing.

Honesty and openness are two separate things. Honesty means not deceiving anyone, which you owe broadly, while openness is how much of yourself you hand over, which is yours to ration. Confusing them leads either to lying in order to feel safe or to oversharing in order to prove sincerity.
Tell the truth to everyone, including when the truth is that you would rather not discuss it. Save the full version for the small number who have earned it. That combination keeps you both trustworthy and intact.
Who gets the open version of you, not just the honest one?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
