Patterns travel down families because they get taught before anyone can examine them, not because anybody sat down and chose them. You inherited whatever you inherited without a vote. What you do have is the first clear look at it, and a pattern that is visible can be interrupted in a way an invisible one cannot.

Name the one thing you would rather not hand on. Then pick the single smallest place it shows up in your own week and do that part differently. Stopping something is slow work and it counts.
