Wonder returns when usefulness stops being the only measure of value.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Asking what something is for is a productive habit that quietly eliminates everything that is not for anything. A view, an hour of doing nothing, a piece of music, a conversation with no purpose. Judged by usefulness they all fail, and a life run entirely on that measure ends up efficient and thin, with the wonder squeezed out for reasons that seemed sensible at each step.

Give some time this week to something with no justification. Not as rest so that you can work better, which is the same measure again. Just something you like, for no reason, and notice how unfamiliar that has become.
