The fact that something is common says nothing about whether it is astonishing.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Rarity and value get bound together so tightly that the common becomes invisible. Water, breath, sleep, a familiar voice, the fact that the sun came up: all abundant, all astonishing on any honest assessment, all overlooked precisely because they can be relied on. Scarcity is a fact about supply and says nothing about what a thing actually is.

Name one thing today that is entirely ordinary and would be extraordinary if it were rare. Let yourself notice it as though it were not guaranteed. This is not gratitude as an exercise so much as correcting a distortion that scarcity has introduced into your attention.
