Urgency and panic are different. Urgency moves fast with a plan. Panic just moves fast.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Speed alone tells you nothing about whether you are handling something. One kind of fast is directed: you know the next three steps and you are taking them quickly. The other kind is motion generated by fear, which feels productive because your heart rate matches the stakes, and it usually costs you the very clarity the situation needed.

When you catch yourself hurrying, stop for one minute and write the next step down. If you cannot name it, you are not being urgent, you are being frightened, and the cure is a plan rather than more speed.
