Sometimes becoming easier to understand requires becoming less interested in explaining yourself.

The more you explain, the less clear you often become. Long justifications introduce qualifications, defensiveness, and detail nobody asked for, and they signal that you are not sure you will be accepted. Saying a plain thing and stopping is harder and lands better, because it leaves the other person room to respond rather than to referee.
Try saying what you want or think in one sentence and then not adding to it. The silence afterward will feel unbearable for about three seconds. Notice what people do with the space, which is usually something better than what they would have done with your explanation.
Whom have you over-explained yourself to lately?
